You've made the call to get licensed, and now the exam is the only thing in your way. The good news is that Pearson VUE publishes the Illinois public adjuster exam down to the question count, so you can know exactly what's coming before you walk in.
The Illinois exam at a glance.
- 100 scored questions.
- 165 minutes.
- A scaled score of 70 to pass. Scores run from 0 to 100, but they aren't a percentage of right answers.
- $92 per attempt, which includes the state's $50 fee, paid when you book.
- Given by Pearson VUE for the Illinois Department of Insurance, in English or Spanish.
What's on the Illinois public adjuster exam?
Pearson VUE's Illinois content outline splits the 100 questions into five sections:
- General property insurance products (35 questions). Homeowners and dwelling forms, mine subsidence, the Standard Fire Policy, commercial property and package policies, businessowners, builder's risk, inland and ocean marine, business interruption, law and ordinance, earthquake, bonds and the National Flood Insurance Policy.
- Insurance terms and concepts (25). Insurable interest, indemnity, peril, proximate cause, appraisal, deductibles, actual cash value, replacement cost, depreciation, salvage, coinsurance, and waiver and estoppel.
- Illinois laws for public adjusters (25). Licensing, bonding, continuing education, contracts, records, conduct and unfair claims practices.
- Building techniques and estimating (10). Electrical and construction basics, and how losses are estimated.
- Policy provisions and contract law (5). Proof of loss, notice of claim, misrepresentation, assignment, subrogation, mortgagee rights and apportionment.
Where should you spend your study time?
Follow the weights. Property products and insurance terms make up 60 of the 100 questions. The Illinois law section is another 25, and it's pure detail, rules you either know or you don't. If you come from construction, building and estimating will feel familiar, but it's only 10 questions.
How do you book the exam?
- Create your Pearson VUE account with your legal name, exactly as it appears on your government ID.
- Book online at pearsonvue.com/us/en/il/insurance.html or by phone at (800) 274-0402, at least 24 hours ahead. Walk-ins aren't allowed, and there's no eligibility certificate to request first.
- Pick a Pearson VUE test center.
- Arrive 30 minutes early with two forms of ID that carry your signature, one of them a government-issued photo ID.
What if you don't pass?
You get a pass or fail report before you leave the test center, and a failing report shows your numeric score and where you were weak. After a first fail, you wait 7 days before you can book again. After a second or later fail, you wait 30 days. You pay the $92 each time. Don't give up. Go back to the sections that cost you points.
