Your path to the license

Study for the exam

Take the public adjuster course online, at your own pace, on your phone, tablet or desktop. Our Illinois public adjuster course covers everything the state exam asks, from Illinois laws for public adjusters to building techniques and estimating.
Quizzes, flash cards and a full-length practice exam show you where you stand before test day. Plan on about six to eight hours, with 12 months of access.

Pass the state exam

No eligibility certificate needed. The Illinois Department of Insurance lets you book directly with Pearson VUE, online or by phone, at least 24 hours ahead. You can take the online public adjuster course anywhere, but you take the exam at a test center.
It's 100 questions in 165 minutes, you need a 70 to pass, and it's $92 per attempt. Bring two IDs with your signature. If you don't pass, you can book a retake after 7 days.

Bond and fingerprints

Illinois requires a $50,000 surety bond or letter of credit. Don't worry, you don't pay $50,000. You pay a yearly premium to a bond company.
You'll also get fingerprinted by an Illinois-approved live scan vendor. Your license isn't issued until the results come back.

Apply for your license

Once you pass, apply on NIPR with the $250 fee, your bond and your contract form, which the state has to approve before you sign a client. You need to be 18 or older and make Illinois your home state. Licensed in Illinois and want Indiana too? See how public adjuster reciprocity works.
It reads like a lot on paper. It isn't once someone walks you through it, and we do. Your license runs two years, and you renew it with 24 hours of continuing education, including 3 hours of ethics.
